The Hill House is Mackintosh's finest and largest domestic project. It has been lovingly restored and is now owned by the Scottish National Trust.

Designed and built for Walter Blackie who was a prosperous Glasgwegian Publisher, Mackintosh designed and implemented every detail of the house

The design of the house resembles Windyhill in that it is broadly L shaped, with the principal rooms laid out in a similar way, although the house is entered from the west end.

Master Bedroom at the Hill House

Entrance Hall at the Hill House Interior spaces follow the characteristic Mackintosh sequence and display his acute sensitivity to the play of natural light. The drawing room incorporates a light filled bay fitted with a window seat and doors going out to the garden. This room is decorated with Mackintosh's famous roses.

Fireplaces and fire tongs, fitted cupboards, chairs and tables, stencilled wall designs and light fittings - every detail was designed by Mackintosh. Starting with practical considerations he created a home which truly reflected his client's way of life.

The Hill House is open to the public see the visit page for details.
